ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF URBANIZATION ON EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN NASARAWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KANO STATE.

Abstract

Urbanization is one of the major demographic forces reshaping Nigeria’s urban and peri-urban

landscapes. While it contributes to modernization and economic growth, it exerts pressure on

public services, especially education. This study assesses the effects of urbanization on educational

infrastructure in Nasarawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State. The research employed

a mixed-methods approach, using questionnaires, interviews, and secondary data sources. Data

were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results show that rapid

population growth and land-use changes have overstretched available educational facilities,

increased pupil–teacher ratios, and deepened spatial inequalities between urban and peri-urban

schools. The study concludes that unless urban planning incorporates educational infrastructure

development, learning quality will continue to decline. Recommendations include integrated urban

planning, improved funding, equitable distribution of schools, and strengthened public–private

partnerships to enhance education delivery.
